moving in Moving-in checklist

Moving house brings with it a number of tasks that nobody likes doing and yet Deadlines have. This page summarises what is coming up in the first few weeks — in the order that makes sense.

Register residence

In Germany, the new place of residence within two weeks of moving in be registered with the registration authority. The Citizens' Registration Office of the city or municipality in which the apartment is located is responsible. Items to bring are the identity card or passport and the Confirmation of residency.

We will issue the landlord's confirmation of residence; it is included in your welcome folder. If multiple people are moving in, everyone must be registered. Anyone moving within the same municipality updates their registration rather than registering anew.

2 Strom — we'll sort that out

That is nothing for you to worry about: We will take care of registering and changing your details with the electricity supplier. We will read the meter together with you during the handover and record the reading in the handover protocol. After we have registered you, you can independently switch your electricity supplier if you wish to do so.

3 Broadcasting Contribution

The broadcasting contribution is your flat collected, regardless of how many people live there and which devices are present; it is currently 18.36 euros a month (as of September 2026). After moving in, you can register at rundfunkbeitrag.de Anyone already paying at another address can update their details there and will not pay twice. Exemptions or reductions are available for recipients of certain social benefits and for people with specific registration marks in their severe disability pass — also via the same website.

4 Internet and phone

The connection is the tenant's responsibility. Sort this out early: depending on the technology, providers take several weeks to activate it. Which type of connection is available at the property and which provider we recommend for your house can be found in the Property profile.

What else is wise

  • Insurance update to the new address. Every tenant should have private liability insurance and home contents insurance; they cover precisely the kinds of damage that can become expensive in a tenancy.
  • Redirection of mail set up at the post office, twelve months.
  • Change address with the bank, employer, health insurance, insurance companies, vehicle registration office and subscriptions.
  • Handover report: You will receive it from us by email, immediately after the handover or return of the flat, usually along with the notification of change of address to the electricity supplier.
  • Meter readings are photographed during the handover or return of the apartment and recorded in the handover protocol. You are also welcome to photograph the meter readings yourself for confirmation.
