Description:
Airolo (1182 m above sea level) south of the Gotthard, the ideal holiday resort served by an international road and rail network. Thanks to the Gotthard road tunnel, the longest in the world (17 km), Airolo is accessible all year round. Here begins the great valley of the Ticino, which gave its name to the entire southern canton. From here you can turn upstream into the Bedretto valley to venture on a detour to the 2,478-metre-high Nufenen Pass, the connection between Ticino and Valais, or follow the Valle Leventina straight downstream. One valley, three worlds. A fifty-kilometre-long arc stretching from the Gotthard massif, with its chain of three-thousand-metre peaks, down to the gentle vineyards at barely three hundred metres above sea level. Located in the heart of the Alps, the Leventina is a connecting gateway between the peoples of the North and the South. On the valley floor lie towns with thriving businesses, crossed by international transport routes. The two sides of the valley are characterised by terraced summer villages. The Leventina is a valley where life is lived at a human scale. Rich in vast forests that oxygenate the air, it is an ideal environment for relaxation, excursions and sport. In summer, the valley offers an abundance of sun, water, greenery and light; in winter, it enchants with its blue and white worlds. The network of paths is very extensive; numerous nature reserves make for unforgettable hikes. The High Road The high-level path on the left-hand side of the Leventina is called the "Strada alta". The "Strada alta" initially climbs from 1,141 m near Airolo to 1,419 m near Altanca, before finally dropping before Biasca from 950 m near Conzemengo down to 300 m at Pollegio. On this approximately 45-kilometre high-altitude hike, we experience a large part of the transition from the mountain region to the southern climes of Ticino. It is also unique to be able to hike for so long high above the valley floor on the southern slopes of our Alps. In the upper Leventina, we encounter charming hillside settlements where dark brown Leventina wooden houses still predominate. Dazzlingly white churches, often standing apart, shine out across the landscape. Resin-scented mountain forests give way to the sunny slopes of the middle Leventina, where the Ticino stone house is already frequently represented. The villages are more densely built and increasingly convey the expected southern character. Birch and scrub forests interspersed with pine have replaced the mountain forest, and delightful paths cross the uppermost chestnut groves. High above the ancient rockfall area of the Biaschina, we have imperceptibly passed into the lower Leventina. Deciduous woods and open meadow slopes with typical mountain villages follow, and we enjoy the magnificent high-altitude hike as far as the foremost *monti* of the valley. The descent to the valley floor through fragrant chestnut and acacia woods makes the hike through the Leventina an unforgettable experience. Mountain hut - Monte Di Vento In the immediate vicinity of the "Strada alta" lies the cosy alpine hut. Just 25 years ago, it served as a shelter for alpine cows. The hay needed to bridge the winter months was stored on the upper floor. Built with fine craftsmanship, the hut was masonry-constructed stone by stone. The individual stones of the thick walls were wedged with small stones and cemented with clay. The wooden structure on top was made using thick tree trunks, while the roof surface was covered with hewn wooden shingles. This little masterpiece has therefore stood the test of time brilliantly over all these years. Even snow avalanches, which frequently carried away unwanted buildings towards the valley, have spared it to this day. The outer contours were largely preserved so that the antique and romantic atmosphere was maintained. The windows and doors were integrated with the utmost consideration to ensure the lighting conditions in the interior were pleasant. An additionally installed fireplace made it possible to generate warmth inside. southern slope of the Leventina The introduction of the alpine hut into the idyllic mountain landscape creates a harmonious overall picture. It sits enthroned on a rocky plateau at a distance from other huts. If one climbs the summit of this mountain massif, a true splendour of impressions lies at one's feet. Val Piora The summit of this mountain is laced with many small lakes. Water in its crystal-clear appearance is a delight to behold. An impression that shows where nature is still nature. final resting place The tours or hikes are repeatedly interrupted by

The totality of the effect is in harmonious accord with the background. The sky enlivens the sight anew from day to day. Alpe di Pesciüm Countless ski slopes turn the snow into a true sporting experience. The ski lifts reach up to an altitude of 2,100 m. A particularly special experience is the ride on the aerial cableway. The view is a genuine delight. Romance in its perfection Upon waking in the morning, the landscape reveals itself in full splendour and beauty. Après-ski / or hike After the fun in the snow or the impressive hike, head back to the alpine hut. With bated breath, the massive wooden shutters and then the door are opened. Admission Monte di Vento Mountain Hut Stepping into the mountain hut makes many a heart beat faster. The first glance is captured by an open fireplace. The view of the magnificent mountain landscape is not impaired by the closed door. coziness Once the first impression has been made, the leisurely part comes into play. A corner bench supplemented with chairs and a table allows for the serving of all kinds of menus and drinks. With Italian red wine, cheese and salami, wellbeing is enhanced. Atmosphere Beside glowing candlelight and the fire in the open fireplace, a cosy, romantic atmosphere develops that can scarcely be surpassed. Atmosphere The blazing fire in the fireplace creates an irresistible focal point. Just looking at it makes the temperature in the body rise. The crackling of the wood, in harmony with the light of the fire, cheers the mood. Relaxation Like in grandfather's day, the sofa and armchair serve for relaxation. Should the need arise to change the seating position to the "horizontal", the sofa can be pulled out into a comfortable bed. The view of the fireplace is still guaranteed.
